Breast Surgery - Mammosplasty

Beauty is a complex notion determined by our perception of life and our surroundings. Cosmetic surgery of the breast can contribute to your expression of beauty by increasing fullness, improving symmetry and balancing proportions between hips and breasts. The reshaping or modification of the breasts appearance by plastic surgery is called Mammoplasty. The majority of patients either choose to increase breast size, augmentation, reduce breast size, reduction or restore sagginess breast lift.

This procedure requires local anaesthesia and sedation. Reduction or augmentation is safety done by removing or adding fat from one area to another through liposuction (see liposculpturing), or If implants are chosen we use biocompatible silicon implants supplied by Mentor, a leading manufacturer and supplier of medical products that meet all international safety standards.

Even though this procedure is well known and practiced, it is surrounded by misunderstandings. Below we will try to clarify some of the most important and misunderstood concepts surrounding mammoplasty:

Common Beliefs

It will take months for results to be seen after having a mammoplasty
One of the advantages of this procedure is that you will be able to start enjoying your new look as soon as one (1) week following the surgery. Approximately 80% recovery is achieved after a month.
It is important to know that scaring may vary from patient to patient and may require additional treatments if any unusual changes to the process occur. All these additional treatments are applied with the purpose of improving the aesthetic result.
Breast sensitivity is reduced after a mammoplasty
It is common to find changes in sensitivity after any surgery, in the case of a mammoplasty there is usually a mild reduction in sensation that improves with time. I take special care in designing my surgeries to optimizing aesthetic results, beauty, balance, as well as clinical results, sensitivity and scaring. I have also noticed in my practice with women who have lost sensation due to previous negative experiences with breast surgery that they recover the lost sensation when the procedure is redone and they regain their self-esteem.
IF given a choice between PIP implants and injectable biopolymers either one could be an acceptable option
Neither one is an acceptable option. PIP implants (Poly Implant Prothese) are a brand of silicone gel breast implants containing a non-approved silicone gel incompatible with human tissue. They are no longer produced but may still be offered in practices where the doctor, the procedures or locations are not certified. PIP implants are two (2) to six (6) times more likely to rupture than standard implants and if rupture occurs may produce inflammation, lymphatic and autoimmune reactions creating serious health risks to the patient. To eliminate any possible risks we recommend the replacement of these implants, however, if you decide to postpone replacement we advise regular monitoring, if rupture does occur immediately replace them.
Signs of rupture of PIP implants:
  • Lumpiness or swelling in and around the breast
  • A change in the shape of the breast
  • Redness
  • Pain and tenderness
  • A burning sensation
  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the armpit
The encasement used in PIP implants insulates the incompatible gel from your body tissues guarding them from the possible negative effects at least for certain time. Injected biopolymers are non-compatible silicone or in many cases other substances that are directly injected into the desired areas. These substances can migrate to other areas producing immunological reactions, inflammation, vascular and nerve damage. Complications may be seen years after the application of these substances.
Our warning is not to accept any type of injectable biopolymers, be well informed, know what you are being offered as treatment, check that the clinic and the chosen doctor have the required certifications and remember that there are newer versions of breast implants to choose from if offered a PIP implant. This decision may be a life-changing one.

Finally I recommend to all my patients who would like to have a mammoplasty that breast size should be in balance with the rest of the body. Body harmony will determine your body expression, influencing deeply your mind, thoughts and beliefs. Harmonious bodies result in harmonious souls.
